As a writer, I started out in print, with magazine fiction and short stories, flash fiction, humour pieces, newspaper articles, policy and procedural docs, technical manuals etc.
I've also been at the cutting edge of technology, writing paid Internet columns back in 2000-01 as well as contributing to one of the earliest phases of e-books (PDF) in 2001.
Many years down the track, and technology completes a full cycle, e-publishing matures, the "Era of the Indie Author Writer Publisher etc" dawns ... and here I am--still at the keyboard or notebook, spinning stories for people to read!
WHERE ARE YOUR BOOKS AVAILABLE?
I now distribute to a range of e-bookstores. You can find the full list on the BUY page.
ARE YOUR BOOKS AVAILABLE IN PRINT OR AUDIOBOOK FORMAT?
I have no plans to release any of my current e-books in print format. However, I won't rule it out for future releases or particular genres. Also, I am keeping tabs on all the new developments in Audiobooks, and can see potential there too.
WHAT SPELLING & GRAMMAR DO YOU USE?
My books are written using British Commonwealth English, spelling and grammar. However, just to confuse everyone, there are exceptions to this rule!
For instance, I wrote the novella Christmas Wishes ('A Holiday Short' series) over a decade ago, using American spelling and decided to self-publish as is. And in other books, I much prefer some US spelling (drafty instead of draughty; donut instead of doughnut) over British spelling, so I've used the American version in those places too.
Also, if the book is set in the United States, I've switched UK words over to US words (e.g. flashlight instead of torch; garbage can instead of rubbish bin) - that sort of thing.
A general notice about using British Commonwealth English is posted in the front matter of each e-book.
WHAT ARE THE HEAT / MATURE CONTENT LEVELS IN YOUR NOVELS?
It will vary from book to book, series to series, and genre to genre. Basically, I'll write what the scene and narrative demands. And a notice about mature content is posted in the front matter of each e-book.
AMAZON versus THE HYPHEN
Recently, Amazon introduced a new formatting tool to their e-books called 'Enhanced Typesetting', applied now to any newly published book. I believe they are still converting older e-books on their site, so quite possibly not all the books you buy may have this format activated yet. You can see the status on the book description / buy page to check, just to make sure.
My own e-books are already highly--and correctly--hyphenated, as it is. But now, with Amazon's tool (of destruction?), pretty much any word, that cannot fit onto the very end of a line and should just hop down to the next line while leaving a little bit of white space at the end of the right align margin, is split with a hyphen--providing it has two plus syllables to hyphenate, that is. Essentially, whatever can possibly be hyphenated IS hyphenated!
And when it comes to typesetting for books or a satisfying and simple reading experience on a screen, well, that is not strictly a good or helpful thing!
So, while I can apologise for what seems like egregious and excessive hyphenation now, there's not a darned thing I, nor my fellow publishers, can do about it.
ARE YOU ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
No. I've been online so long now, I've seen the rise then eventual fall of far too many Internet things. The only place to find me now is here, my official website.
[ 2014 note- A BlogSpot site using 'Lita Locke' in the URL exists, but it is not in English, does not belong to me and has no affiliation with this publishing name + website! ]
I do not belong to any associate or reward program. Each outgoing store link on this website is a direct link to my author bookshelf at that particular vendor, and does not go through any third party or associate schemes.
A NOTE FOR ASPIRING OR NEW AUTHORS & WRITERS -
Please do not send me your stories, writing or writing questions. I am unable to help you get published or with your writing, editorial, critique etc needs. There are places online that cover this information or offer the help and services you may require. Any unsolicited stories or writing sent will be deleted unread! Any submitted plot ideas for my own novels will be deleted unread as well, as I do not accept manuscripts or plot input from others for legal and ethical reasons.
LICENSES & OWNERSHIP OF E-BOOKS
E-books are currently NOT covered under the First Sale doctrine, like print books are. Instead, they are limited licensed -- not owned outright -- to individuals. So, while you mostly likely own your reading device (Kindle, Kobo, Nook etc), you don't actually fully own any of the e-books on it! What this essentially means is that readers cannot resell, sub/relicense, copy and reproduce, re/distribute, or transfer the e-book or its license in any way, shape or form.
Depending on the vendor you choose to buy your e-books from, you may however be permitted to borrow, lend and gift an e-book according to their specific terms and conditions.
